This week you will be focusing on programming and sensor interfacing. One of the highlights this week will be for you to interface a sensor with your BalloonSat and write a program to collect data with it.
The Wednesday Science Lecture this week will be given by Dr. Jeff Blackmon. He will be talking about nuclear physics and how all the elements are made. Considering that everything you see around you (including your own body) was once in the interior of a star or in an exploding star, this should be a very interesting talk. This coming Saturday (June 13) will be our first science facility tour. We will be going to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (http://www.marybird.org/) where we will initially have a lecture on medical physics and then have a tour of the facility.

- Dr. T. Gregory Guzik received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1980 and has since worked with space, balloon and accelerator based experiments for research in galactic cosmic rays, solar flares, nuclear fragmentation and cosmic ray propagation. He is currently a Professor-Research in the Depart. of Physics & Astronomy at Louisiana State University. Most recently, Dr. Guzik has been involved with the “Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC)” high energy cosmic ray balloon experiment, for which he is also the Flight Team Leader for the Antarctica launch campaigns. He is also deeply involved in education / public outreach projects including the BREC-LSU-BRAS Highland Road Park Observatory, the PLATO teacher workshop program, the ROBIE education technology development program, the LaACES project for entry level students to develop small payloads for launch on sounding balloons, the NSF supported PACER program for minority institutions and HASP which supports up to twelve advanced student payloads from around the country for flights to an altitude of 124,000 feet and for a duration approaching 20 hours.
